"Study: Diets beat exercise"

"Losing weight by itself
works better that
aerobic exercise by itself
in reducing the risk of heart disease,
a study of fat men found."

"The message,
though,
is
to do both,
researchers say."

"After nine months,
the weight-loss group
dropped an average of 20 pounds,
while members of the exercise group
had improved their fitness
by 16 percent,
measured by how much oxygen
their bodies consumed
while they exercised."

"Researchers were surprised
to find that weight loss
clearly produced
more benefits than exercise alone."

"Levels of 'good' cholesterol
improved 13 percent
in the weight-loss group,
compared
with 2 percent
to 3 percent among the exercisers."

"Blood sugar,
a yard stick
for diabetes,
dropped 9 percent among the
weight-loss group,
vs. no change among exercisers."

The Associated Press, Study: Diets beat exercise, The Denver Post, unknown date, p. 3A.

"When a student awaits trial,
charged
with a violent crime:
Does He Stay In School?"

"The school district
provides a private tutor
to teach the student in his home."

"In Littleton Public Schools,
the students,
a 14-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy,
were charged
with second-degree kidnapping,
second-degree sexual assault,
third-degree assault and
false imprisonment
involving a 15-year-old girl.

The incident occurred June 22,
not at school,
but was not reported
to the Arapahoe County
Sheriff's Department
until August 25."

"For the first time in
Littleton Public Schools,
the school board imposed
home-based schooling
until a court decision is made."

"The major advantage
to home-based schooling
is that the student continues
to be enrolled in the system
and can get credit
for work while he or she awaits trail.

If a not-guilty verdict comes back,
the student did not lose
school credit during the interim,
for which some parents have sued..."

"The object is not
to get them out of school;
the object is
to keep them in school,"
Bartlett said.

"By providing the tutor,
the school board does not appear
to assume guilt before a trial,
as an expulsion might imply."

"Legislation also clearly defined
the five major reasons
for expulsions.

They include:
distribution of any controlled substance,
robbery assault,
habitually disruptive behavior and
bringing a weapon of any kind
to school.

If the weapon is a firearm,
the punishment is
immediate and mandatory expulsion
for one year."

"...a 'great majority'
involved middle school students," Bartlett said.

O'Toole, Kathleen, When a student awaits trial, charged
with a violent crime: Does He Stay In School?, unknown periodical, unknown date, p.3.
